A Soldier Serving in Afghanistan's Letter to the #G20 Police

This appeared in the comments section of Torontoist but was just too good to stay in the comments section. It comes from a serving member of the Canadian Armed Forces in response to police actions surrounding the G20. It is reprinted here in full (hope no one minds.)

on edit: It has been suggested by some that the letter might not be real, that is that it might not be from an actual soldier, I have no way of knowing. The person in question: 'Eric J' is a commenter on Torontoist, and cannot be further identified unless he choses to come forward. If we want to speculate, it is possible that it's an ordinary person, if so he is an excellent fiction writer. He uses a great deal of detail about the military, Afghanistan, friends and family etc. It is also possible that the person is a soldier and chooses not to identify himself because of that (and/or because of the friends and relatives he claims to have on the police force.) In any case, fact or fiction, they are powerful words.

As a serving member of the Canadian Forces and a combat veteran, I can say with absolute clarity and conviction that i am disgusted by the actions of the supposed "other half" of our nations security, the civilian shield to the army's sword. I managed to fight and win battles while vastly outnumbered, against a heavily armed, mobile, guerilla force with as few as 10 fellow Canadians. 10 Canadian taxpayer funded and trained, government employees fighting and dying to prevent the lawlessness and injustice the so-called Black Bloc seems only too willing to promote. 10 Canadian ambassadors (because that is what you are when your wear and salute your nations flag) that knew their jobs and acted as consummate, trained professionals in all things, which incidentley is why i am alive to type this. The enemy we fought was entrenched within a civilian population and knew only too well the problems that could be created by putting innocent Afghans in the center of the conflict. So as is our duty and our job we let them bait us and let them crow and then when we had a shot we took it WITH NO CIVILIAN CASUALTIES. How could I know? Because we were the medical center for the region and we visited the villages regularly.

Knowing when to apply force and how to apply it can be a very simple thing when you assign value to the thing you are leveraging that force against. Am I prepared to kill the human being who is placing the IED or recoiless rifle that will kill three of my brothers? 3 of my fellow Canadians who have answered the call to defend what we so often take for granted half a world away? Without pause yes, and I will for the rest of my life, I took an oath that does not end with a contract.

When you put that uniform on you are no longer John Smith of Toronto. You are a member of the Canadian Forces, just as you are a Royal Canadian Mounted Police Officer, or an Ontario Provincial Police Officer. A government employee who's mandate and training is to PROTECT the public. Not to protect themselves from threats within the public. It is their job as the civilian arm of our nations security to be the blue line between those that would see our way of life burnt to it's end and the Canadians who see more than a simple flag.

Instead they formed a black wall and responded to WORDS with unrelenting, armed and often random VIOLENCE.

I don't care if Osama Bin Laden himself is hiding on Queen Street like Waldo... you don't just drop an airstrike on the village.

You PARTICULARLY don't do it after the entire village sang Oh Canada in fear.

I understand the effect of an unsuspecting ambush tactics to confuse and demoralize... but when the first three ranks of 'protestors' are waving peace signs standing outside the gap wearing American Apparel and drinking starbucks... I might tailor my tactics accordingly.

People have said that they 'understand' why Police might have been on edge due to the events of the day before...

Bullshit.

I understand that i watched friends die and then the next day went out and did my job with the professionalism expected of someone who claims to serve his country and as in holland i gave chocolate to children while the engineers rebuilt.

When you back people into a corner... they will fight and sell their lives dearly to escape.

The 'kettle' is a useful tactic to isolate 'riot ringleaders' but with even minor coordination it can simply be turned into a turnstyle type processing operation as opposed to a way to jack up arrest counts to justify budgets and manpower.

Too little too late from the Police especially after the complete lack of presence as the city they are paid to protect, burned the day before.

A number of extremely reputable journalists and civilian truth mongers have been given unprecedented ability to expose the absolute incompetence of both the police leadership and of the individual line trooper.

This is as sure a black stain on their official colors as it was a death knell to the Canadian Airborne after one of their members killed a Somali boy. I would hang my head in shame if i affected any part of Sunday's riot operation, willing or not.

I have a relative who was caught up in the crowd. Just a student who is young and wants to take inspired photos, and does it damn well. He was detained (not arrested) But I have seen his footage and i am disgusted.

I did not put my life on the line and watch my best friends take their last breath to come home and watch the largest gathering of law enforcement this country has ever seen... cowed to the point inaction as the city and its citizens endure the wanton destruction to their homes and business, only to have it answered by a heavy handed and indiscriminant hammer blow against quite possibly the very same people they so utterly failed to help previously.

I understand that to put a riot line in front of the black block may have caused injuries and violence.

Well... they asked for it. Says so right on their sign.

Guess what else. That's why you took the oath of service to your country. If you don't want to get injured on the job... be a yoga instructor.

Excuses are quite common apparently everyone has one. I would advise anyone reading this to write their local MP and ask what your government is doing to police it's members and policies that have utterly failed in their duty to this country.

I was in the city all weekend and if i had a dollar for every group of 6 police officers i saw sitting on corners shooting the shit... I would probably have enough to hire a ten man infantry section for the weekend to lead the police through some drills, of how to serve the nation they are sworn to defend.

This should not be taken as a sweeping assault on the police as i even have a few relatives and many friends among their ranks. But just as I would not stand for injustice within my own house... I will not stand for it in theirs.

I have met countless officers who uphold our laws with dignity and professionalism. I would gladly give my life for anyone of them.

What will not stand is when under the guise of 'security' police are given sweeping powers with no chance of reciprocity, the need to explain themselves or chance to defend against bullying tactics employed on a peaceful gathering of my country's citizens.

I don't give a flying squirrel if they were threatening, or there were reports of weapons. You have full body armour and shields. Suck it up. Besides, you should be happy. Bricks move a lot slower than bullets.

I support our law enforcement as i support our troops. But my support is not a blank cheque to be held cheaply against the values and rights you trample as surely as you stepped on our flag. You will find me a tenacious opponent and one now who wants to know just how that cheque i did write you was used... and i think after saturdays impotence and sundays ignorance someone has to pay the piper...

and this time, it won't be me.

Your words are powerful weapons and tools in your fight today. I salute you soldier! While I do not respect the offices representing the Canadian Army nor the various police forces of our nation, I have infinite respect for those individuals who flock to their banners and uphold what is right despite the organizations' small flaws. We can at least appreciate that the sword and shield as the original poster refers to them, of the nation of Canada, are far less flawed than that of other nations.

I was in Toronto during these events, working as a security guard. I heard a firsthand account of the shield line rush and just how frightening it was. It seemed overkill.

I personally wonder why firehoses weren't employed as crowd control as they were during the rush on the Armories during the 2004 blackout. Spray anyone inciting to riot with a firehose. That'll gentle you down. Spray anyone wearing one of those stupid bandana's right in their stupid face with a firehose, until such a time as your bandana becomes removed.

The Black Bloc revealed their fear of cameras at least once to the press. They were also caught donning their outfits on security camera at least once. Arrests were made based on these images. Spray their masks off and blatantly photograph what is revealed.

Unlikely weapons they might be, cameras and firehoses seem so much less violent than lines of riotshields indiscriminately rushing crowds which, as the original poster, a soldier whom we all (Canadians) owe the debt of at least paying attention to what he says, so eloquently said, contained as its first three ranks hippies holding up peace signs and wishing for an end to war as if the G20 would accept pennies like some kind of well or fountain.

I'm no Policeman. I'm not a soldier. I have no military or police training. I am certainly no tactician. But I can see that firehoses would have been far more effective weaponry, especially when there were Police Cruisers on FIRE and cops standing around watching them burn. Of course, it's very easy for me to make all of these recommendations after the fact.

"Real soldier" or not, this individual hit the nail squarely. Right on.

The real responsibility for this woeful incidence of rampant unjustified brutality is the organization who decided that Downtown Toronto was an appropriate site for this G8/G20 meeting. That group of idiots just happen to be the PMO of our Dear Leader "Stephan String Plucker" AKA Steven Harper. After what went on in Quebec City and Seattle how could any one with a bit of a brain think that waving the red flag at the anarchist bulls would not provoke a charge? But maybe I under estimate the PMO - is it possible that they actually wanted the show the protesters that, like Premier Harris did at Ipperwash, this PM would flex his muscle and show them once and for all just who is in charge of the use of force in this country. Harris ended up with a dead native Canadian and an inquiry that helped hound him from office. Hopefully we can get the same result for Harper minus the dead protester (That was only by luck - not planning!)

this is killer. we need more soldiers and police to step forward and be honest, anonymous or not. there's strong opposition to a public inquiry from the right. these testaments will help bring the all our citizens on board.

brilliantly written.

People were allowed to protest peacefully until property began being damaged and people's safety began to be jeopordized. At that point the police have to take action. The declaration to disperse is given and time is given to do so. If you are remaining after that order then you risk arrest. Just because you hold up your hands displaying the peace sign does not mean you have the right to ignore those orders.

I am suprised a soldier would have such a condesending attitude. If you were being shot at from people behind innocents would you run and hide or act to stop the threat and clear the area of innocents the best you could? What if these "innocents" refused to leave? Would you use force to make them leave or kindly walk around them while you search for the shooters?

Such a holier than thou attitude makes me sick.

The vandalism downtown lasted for an hour and a half - police made no attempt at all to intervene in that.

Afterward there was no vandalism from the protesters (and no 'violence') at any point during the whole weekend.

No one was 'shot at' by the protesters - that's just stupid. The only gun police have produced was a replica (non functioning model) that was unrelated to the G20.

In many cases including Queen and Spadina, the Esplanade and Queen's Park protesters were never told to disburse, or were told to disburse only after every exit had been blocked by police.

In either case the protesters (and journalists, and bystanders) were then attacked violently by police - not as a response to violence but as a response to words.

In other words Steve you haven't the foggiest idea what you're talking about.

Steve said...

I do know what I speak of Justin, as I was there. The order to disperse (that's how you spell it) was given in Queen's Park and Spadina, you must not have been listening and the exits were only blocked after the time to disperse ended, at that point everyone is under arrest, journalists and bystanders. And when I speak of being shot at I am given you, the soldier a scenerio, no the police were never fired on.

Justin Beach said...

Then the only explanation is that they gave an order to disperse and then allowed more people in because you are the only person from Q & S who heard that order including the journalists who were closer to the police line than any of the protesters and who have unanimously claimed that there was no such order.

Steve said...

You've asked every single journalist have you? That must have took some time. I was as close as the journalists and I did hear it. As for more people coming into the area I can't say if they were being allowed in or not but I would hope that police were warning people to stay out of the area because arrests were about to take place.

Justin Beach said...

No I haven't asked them but I've read all the published reports (I believe I can't say that there aren't a few I might have missed) and have seen the video from several of the stations online. Some of them have gone quiet now because they are part of a class action suit.

If you were as close as the journalists, who were interacting with police, I can only assume that you are a police officer - in which case I commend you for saying anything at all. I would like to hear honest accounts of what happened from some of the line officers. Blair is blowing smoke and most of the decision makers are completely silent.

Steve said...

I am thinking you are only reading the reports you want to read. I welcome you to read an article by a journalist in MacLeans from July 6. I welcome a public enquiry into the G20, it would be more waste of money, but it would tell the real story at least.

Justin Beach said...

The McLean's article was (I think) by Andrew Coyne. He wasn't at Queen and Spadina he was in the international press center inside the security premeditate. I don't believe anyone from McLeans was at Q & S but their editorial policy has been clear - Coyne (the editor of McLeans) said during the weekend that there were no protesters, that they weren't actually protesting anything peacefully or otherwise.
