Failure is the only word that can describe this G20 and everyone involved. For the government itself the G20 failed before it started. There is no need for the G20 and the G8 and Canada should withdraw from both. Everything they are doing should be handled by the United Nations.
The G20 as an event failed the moment that Stephen Harper decided to hold it in Toronto over the objections of the city. Harper and his government are 100% responsible for all damage done during the G20.
The protests ultimately failed because of the Black Bloc. Whatever messages peaceful protesters gathered in Toronto to spread - the only message that will get out is the one delivered by the Black Bloc goon squad.
The Black Bloc, who claim to be anarchists, failed. If you're an anarchist in Toronto you should never admit it going forward. The message has been delivered. Anarchy = violence and destruction, while accomplishing nothing. Remember if you really believe in something you have no need for anonymity and while putting your own safety on the line for something you believe in can be noble, as soon as you put someone else's safety at risk, without their consent - you are a criminal - nothing noble about it at all.
The Toronto Police have failed. Initially they failed by asking for a suspension of civil liberties. Today they failed because it is their job to protect this city and its residents. They haven't done so. They hid behind their fence and let the city be smashed and burned. Hopefully it won't happen again.
All in all a complete and total failure, for everyone involved.

The police were pathetic. Maybe they don't have any strategists. It was easily predictable how the Bloc would behave.
